(JS-1)  JOSHUA JARBOE

"March 7th . Buried the old Joshua Jarboe about the

70th year of age. dead on the 6th day of March, 1842.”

This simple statement found in the Burial Register of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, is the final record of a man who lived out his life in three states, in such a quiet, peaceful, unassuming manner, that today, there are few clues to the character of those seventy years.

Joshua was born on the eve of the Revolution, about 1775, in St. Mary s County, Maryland to Joshua Jarboe Snr. (31) and Jane He grew up on a small tract in the Beaverdam Manor section of the county.  After his father’s death in 1792, his mother married a neighbor, Edmund B. Greenwell, and continued living in the same area.

Joshua married Eleanor Elliott on November 10, 1795 and soon after, in company with friends and relatives, the young couple moved to Washington County, Kentucky.

Joshua's name is found in the tax list which was compiled the summer of 1797.

Joshua and Eleanor did not immediately take up any land but his brother, John Barton Jarboe, purchased 50 acres of land on the Rolling Fork River.  When John Barton died in 1802, Joshua was his sole beneficiary, and he held John Barton's land from 1803-1816. This land was in the  southern part of Washington (now Marion) County, near the Nelson County line.  Their children's baptismal records are found in different parish records, but this does not necessarily mean the family moved.  More likely it is the result of the movement of the priests who circulated through the area administering the sacraments and then recorded them when they returned to their parish.

The last record of the Joshua Jarboe family in Kentucky is November 1817 when both Eleanor and Joshua gave consent for their young son Richard to marry.  The next record of the family is in Perry County, Indiana, when a marriage license was issued to'their daughter Elizabeth and James Lanman October, 1818.

Joshua lived at the mouth of Oil Creek and the Ohio River.  He did not obtain title to his land until 1828 and sold it in 1834.  He continued to reside in the county, however, until his death.  Although he is always listed as a farmer in census records, this may not have been his sole occupation.  Joshua always lived on navigable waterways near heavily forested land.

After her husband's death, Eleanor lived with her daughter, Mary Ann Wheatley, and after her death, Eleanor lived with her son, James Jarboe.  These census records helped to establish the names of some of Joshua and Eleanor's children.

Census records indicate that Joshua and Eleanor had eleven children- six sons and five daughters.  Baptismal records for Benedict and Eleanor Jr. are from the register of Holy Mary Church in Calvary, Kentucky.  Richard's descent is proved by his marriage consent, and Mary Ann and James can be assumed to be their children by the fact that Eleanor lived with them after Joshua's death.

Discovery of the names of the remaining children has been greatly aided by two discoveries.  The first is a legal record of the heirs of Jane McCue (McHugh).  The second is a letter from a correspondent.

Jane McCue was a widow during the period of her residency in Perry County.  The identity of her husband is unknown, but she was born in Maryland about 1781.  She lived in the same neighborhood as the Jarboes, on land she purchased from the government and Zachariah Jarboe (JS-13), a grandson of Joshua.

In August 1851, Jane McCue made an agreement with Andrew Jackson Alien, husband of Sarah Jarboe, by which he would support and maintain her during the balance of her life and at her death, inherit her property.

Upon her death in 1866, Jackson Alien produced the written agreement to the court and asked for a deed to the land.  Whereupon, the court called forth the heirs of Jane McCue to issue a deed to the Aliens.  The heirs listed were: Richard Jarboe, James Jarboe, James Lanman, the unknown heirs of Elizabeth Lanman, the unknown heirs of Jane Gear, Martin Wheatley, Elener A Wheatley, William Wheatley, Adam Rosacrants, Elizabeth Rosacrants, George Little, Elener A Little, Lafayette Wheatley, Madalin Richardson, Daniel Richardson, and John A Wheatley.  The last twelve names are heirs of George Wheatley and Mary Ann (Jarboe) Wheatley.  Martin Wheatley is the husband of Eleanor (Jarboe) Wheatley.  Since Eleanor, Richard, James, and Mary Ann are all children of Joshua and Eleanor, it seems likely that Elizabeth (Jarboe) Lanman and Jane (Jarboe) Gear are also their children.  This list then indicates the heirs of Joshua Jarboe who were living in 1867 and precludes there being any other living children.

This document raises the question. Who is Jane McCue?  The only satisfactory explanation is that she is Joshua's sister Jane who married Reuben Craig in Maryland and, twice widowed, found her way to her relations in Perry County.  She must have had no children of her own or the court would have called them to give up their rightful inheritance.  Since small estates in Indiana are not required to be probated, we have no probate for Joshua and are indebted to Jane McCue for this list of his heirs.

The rest of the children of Joshua and Eleanor can be inferred from the letter following.

See Reference Section for a copy of this agreement.

A CURIOUS LETTER

Very recently an informant forwarded to me a letter she had received.  It says in part:

"Dear Mr Wilcox:

I'm sorry that my information on the Jarboe family is not very thorough.  I have very little on it, since I have not spent much time with it.

My aunt sent me the following information on the children of Richard Jarboe and Nancy Jates.  I have not researched this except I have found marriage records for the first four children.  The children listed were

as follows:

1. Sarah Ann    m John A J Allen          Oot 4, 1849

2. Rose Ellen  m  William Baker          Jul 6, 1842

3. Zacharia     m Kit (Catherine) Jarboe  Aug 12,1841

4. Benedict    m Catherine Jarboe        Feb 23,1845

5. Martha          single

6. Tresa

7. Thrusia        Twins who got TB at about age 16 and died about age 30

8. Edward      m Betsy Mills

I call this letter curious because the last three names were totally unfamiliar to Jarboe searchers.  They cannot possibly be the children of Richard Jarboe.  They conflict with the list of known descendants of Richard Jarboe and with census records. However, they do resemble the gaps in the list of Joshua's children.

Edward Jarboe has been located in the 1840 census for Jefferson county, Kentucky.  He was born between 1810-1820, long before Richard could have had any children, but of the right age to be the unknown son of Joshua.  If Edward married Betsy Mills, the marriage must have taken place in Marion county and be among the records destroyed during the Civil War.  None of the neighboring counties has such a marriage record.  The 1850 census for Marion county shows Dolly Jarboe living with Cynthia and James Mills. It seems logical that there is a Mills-Jarboe connection and I can accept Edward as a son of Joshua even though we lack the evidence to prove it.

The information about twins is also "curious".  Census records indicate Joshua had two sons born between 1820 and 1825.  These boys are not in the 1840 census, so presumably left home or died before 1840 - a span of fifteen years.  Again, the documented facts bear a certain resemblance to this letter.  I have seen Joshua written in such a way that it looked like Trosius.  Perhaps the other twin was John or Jesse, although the names as given in the letter appear to be female names. The letter writer does not give us the source of his aunt’s information, but they cannot be children of Richard Jarboe, as he states.  Richard has many children born in this time period, and their names are known.  Like Edward, they are most likely, children of Joshua.

Census records also list a female born between 1826-1830 living with Joshua and Eleanor in the 1840 census, but not in evidence in 1850 census returns.  She is not a twin.  There is no marriage record in Perry county that fits her.  She either died young or she is Sarah Jarboe, daughter of Richard Jarboe, living with her grandparents as some researchers believe.

All this is of rather academic interest, since the deed record from Jane McCue indicates that none of these children of Joshua had any issue.  However, the information contained in the letter tends to explain the “only heirs” as listed in the deed:  the last children of Joshua did not survive, nor did they leave any children.

Although all the information contained in the letter is not totally accurate, it is a welcome addition to the information compiled through previous searching.  It provides us with new names and suggest areas that need to be explored.

Pulling together the information from all these sources, it is possible to construct the following family for Joshua and Eleanor (Elliott) Jarboe – the Josua Jarboe Line

ELIZABETH JARBOE (JS-2)

ELIZABETH JARBOE (JS-2) was probably the first child of Joshua and Eleanor Jarboe. She would have been born in Washington County, Kentucky but married in Indiana, the year the family migrated there. Her husband, James Lanman, Jr. was the son of James Lanman, Snr. According to the pension record of James, Snr., his son was born in 1797 in North Carolina. After James' and Elizabeth's marriage, they moved to dark County,  Indiana. By 1830, they were in Schuyler County, Illinois and Elizabeth Jarboe Lanman died there. James remarried in 1848 in Iowa. Lanman researchers list the following children for James and Elizabeth.

(JS-2) Children of ELIZABETH JARBOE and James Lanman, Jr.

(J6-13) MARY "POLLY" LANMAN b 1819

(JS-19) ELIZABETH LANMAN b 1834

(JS-20) WILLIAM LANMAN b 1837 Jefferson Co., Iowa

By his second wife. Nancy Vanhover, James Lanman Jr. had one additional child, Louise, born in l8U9. No further research has been done on this family.

RICHARD JARBOE (JS-3)

RICHARD JARBOE was born in Washington County, Kentucky in late 1797 or early 1798, and spent his boyhood there.  He married Nancy Yates, daughter of Zachiarah Yates and Mna Hayden.  Shortly after their marriage, the young couple, along with Richard's family, removed to Parry County, Indiana.

Richard's second^wife, Margaret Miller, was the daughter of John Miller and Susannah Springer, and the mother of his six youngest children. Margaret died January 18, 1875 and is buried at St. Augustine Cemetery, in Leopold, Indiana.

Richard always lived near his father.  In the early years, they lived In Sections 28 and 29 in Union Township, near Derby.  Later, Richard followed his father into Sections 4 and 9 of the same township, just east of Leopold, Indiana.

He made at least two trips back to Kentucky for his name is recorded in the tax lists there in 1823 and 1824, and again in 1826 and 1827.  Some of his children were born in Kentucky.

Although there is no death record, probate, or tombstone for Richard, it is assumed he died on his homestead in Perry (bunty.  The last record of  him is the 1870 census.  He is not in the 1875 tax list, the earliest tax list found.  Presumably he died between 1870 and 1875.                        j

Original searchers of Richard's family were told that Richard had three daughters that married Baker brothers - Jack, Alien, and William.  This is untrue.  There were no brothers by those names in early Perry County. This seems to be one of those confused but true stories.  Richard's daughters did marry three brothers. Jack Allen, and William Baker.

JAMES JARBOE (JS-31)

James Jarboe was born, lived, and died in Perry County, Indiana. He was the fifth child of .Richard_Jarboe ..(JS-33land Margaret Miller. His wife. Charlotte, was the daughter of Thomas Alvey and Henrietta (Alvey) Alvey. James and Charlotte were members of St. Augustine parish. They lived in Union Township but never owned any land. In the 1860 census they were enumerated between Richard Jarboe (JS-3) and James' brother, Joshua (JS-28) James is not in the 1870 Perry County census. After the baptism of Mary Ellen in

1865, there is no record of them in the county until the baptism of Letitia in 1876.

Charlotte (Alvey) Jarboe's death is recorded in the church register as Nov. 21, 1879. James is listed in Leopold Township with his five daughters in the 1880 census. His son James apparently died young. Census records show James Sr suffered from a spinal disease.

Family records indicated that James had married a second time and had additional children, but the wife's name was never given. The name of his second wife was found in their marriage record in Perry County and matching stones were found in St. Mary  cemetery, Tell City, although they are  buried several rows apart. The marriage record for daughter Anna M, confirms that it was her father that married Jane Gates. James and Jane cleared title to land in Sec. 32 for John Miller in 1893. According to her tombstone, Jane was   born January 18, 1856 and died April 11, 1896.

Identification of James was made more difficult  because of the condition of his tombstone. He actually died in 1901, as the picture shows. Cause of death was spinal apoplexy and myelitis was a contributing condition. The 1900 census states he had not worked in that census year.  Although the tombstone gives 1841 as his birthyear  James was probably born in 1839 or 1840

The inscription and relief on the stones of Jane (Gates) Jarboe and James (JS-31) are identical:

A precious one from us has gone,

A voice we loved is stilled;

A place is vacant in our home,

Which never can be filled."

James purchased two lots in Tell City and sold them shortly before his death which necessitated probating his estate. John Sweeney was granted letters of administration December 18, 1901 (Bk. 8, p 250). William Cluthe was appointed guardian of Anna and Louis C Lasher was appointed guardian of Leonard and James.

Anna, James, and Leonard each received 1/8 of the real estate value, clearly indicating that James (JS-31) had a second family. Guardian accounts state that Leonard "is at St. Vincent orphanage at Vincennes (1903: p 524) and James left Tell City July 18, 1903 and his whereabouts are unknown". Lawyer Sweeney was successful in collecting a pension James (JS-31) was entitled to (Bk. 9, p 414) in 1904. In 1906, the accounts tell us that James was at Dyersberg, Tennessee and Leonard was with August GrammeIspacher near Troy, Indiana. In 1908, the guardian is reimbursed for "money paid to James Jarboe for the purpose of obtaining an artificial limb". James is in Los Angeles, California. After that the accounts are silent. Louis C Lasher later married Martha (Jarboe) Evrard (JN-89 )

Baptized Margaret, Margaret Martha may have gone by the name Martha. At least she is listed in one census record that way. Virgil Ash was born October 10, 1836 to Benjamin Ash and Hannah (Fig) Ash, and was a non-Catholic at the time he married Margaret. However, all of their children are baptized at St. Mary and Virgil himself was baptized three weeks before his death. He died August 26, 1907.
